The Best Season to Elope or Have an Intimate Wedding in Ohio
If you’re dreaming of eloping or planning an intimate wedding in Ohio, one of the biggest decisions is when. Our state has some seriously beautiful seasons, but let’s be honest — Ohio weather has a mind of its own. From surprise heat waves to fast-falling leaves, nothing here is guaranteed. Still, each season has its magic. Here’s my honest breakdown to help you decide when might be the best time for your celebration.
Spring (March – May)
March in Ohio is… let’s just say it’s still basically winter. Cold, gray, and not much blooming yet. April brings signs of life, but also plenty of rain (hello, muddy trails). If you’re picturing fresh greenery and flowers, you’ll want to wait until May, when the leaves finally look full and the world feels alive again. Early spring can be sweet, but don’t expect that lush, green backdrop until later.
Sunset also shifts quickly this season. In March it’s still around 7:30 p.m., by April closer to 8:00 p.m., and by late May it stretches to about 8:45 p.m. That gives you plenty of evening light for portraits, but also means ceremonies earlier in the season may need to start a bit sooner if you want that golden-hour glow.
Summer (June – August)
June is one of the most beautiful months — warm but not sweltering (though it definitely can be — my brother’s wedding on June 21st, 2025, ended up being the hottest day of the year!). Most years though, June gives you long days, vibrant greenery, and that dreamy golden light in the evenings.
Summer is also festival season in Ohio. From county fairs to music festivals, there’s always something happening — and if you’re adventurous, weaving one of these into your elopement day could be so much fun. Our fairs are truly magical, and they can give you an experience that feels unique and unforgettable.
Another thing to keep in mind: the sun doesn’t set until around 9:30 p.m. in peak summer. That means if you’re hoping for golden hour or sunset photos, you’ll want to book your photo and video team for more coverage. One of my favorite tips? Consider a later ceremony time, around 5:00 p.m. I know it sounds late, but it makes a world of difference. You’ll avoid the harsh midday light, skip the worst of the humidity, and enjoy soft, flattering light for your vows. Plus, you can always get bridal party and family photos done pre-ceremony to keep things moving smoothly toward a dinner start around 6:00 or 6:30 p.m.
Fall (September – November)
Fall is one of the most popular times for weddings and elopements in Ohio — and for good reason! The crisp air, cozy evenings, and colorful backdrops make this season unforgettable. While the exact timing of peak leaves shifts each year, you don’t need to stress — even if the whole forest isn’t glowing, there are always vibrant spots we can find for stunning photos.
Generally, September still feels like late summer. Colors peak mid-to-late October, and by early November many trees are bare. Rainy years bring brighter, longer-lasting color, while dry years make leaves drop faster. Sunset also comes earlier — around 7:30 p.m. in late September, 6:45 p.m. mid-October, and 5:30 p.m. by early November — so earlier ceremonies or golden-hour portraits are the way to go.
Beyond the scenery, fall is also packed with seasonal charm. Imagine sneaking off to a corn maze, picking pumpkins together, sipping hot apple cider, or ending the night around a bonfire — all perfect ways to make your intimate wedding or elopement even more personal.
Winter (December – February)
Winter in Ohio can be absolutely magical for elopements — quiet landscapes, snowy backdrops, and cozy, intimate vibes. The biggest snowfalls usually arrive in January and February, so that’s when you’re most likely to get that true winter wonderland look. Just keep in mind that snowy days can also mean tricky driving conditions, especially if your celebration is in a more remote location.
Another important note: the sun sets very early this season — often around 5:00 p.m. in December and January — so planning an earlier ceremony or portraits is key to making the most of the daylight. Even with shorter days, winter brings its own charm. Think candlelit dinners, hot cocoa or cider, a warm fire to gather around, or even fun adventures like sledding or skating. It’s a season that leans naturally into romance and intimacy.
A Quick Note on Weather Surprises
Ohio is full of seasonal charm, but it also comes with some curveballs. Spring is tornado season, summer can bring pop-up thunderstorms, fall weather can shift overnight, and winter sometimes drops snow without warning. But here’s the good news — these surprises rarely stop the celebration. With a little flexibility (and a good backup plan), your day can be beautiful no matter what the forecast says.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, there’s no “wrong” season to celebrate your love in Ohio. Each time of year has its own beauty, and the best choice is the one that feels most like you. Whether that means a golden fall day, a cozy winter evening, a bright spring morning, or a long summer night, your wedding or elopement will be unforgettable — not because of the weather, but because of the love you’re promising.
And that’s where I come in. My role isn’t just to take pretty pictures — it’s to help take the stress off your shoulders, keep you present in each moment, and document your love in the truest, most honest way. No matter the season, you’ll have a day that feels genuine, joyful, and completely yours.
