How to Elope in Shenandoah National Park

Eloping in Shenandoah National Park is perfect for couples who want mountain views, quiet overlooks, and a slow, meaningful wedding day without the pressure of a traditional ceremony. Located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah offers one of the most accessible and elopement-friendly national park experiences on the East Coast.

As a Shenandoah elopement photographer, I help couples plan their day from start to finish — from understanding the legal process to choosing locations and building a timeline that actually feels relaxed.

If you’re wondering how to elope in Shenandoah National Park, here’s everything you need to know.

Virginia Marriage License Requirements for Elopements

To legally elope in Shenandoah National Park, you’ll need a Virginia marriage license issued by a local Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.

Virginia does not have a waiting period, which means you can apply for your marriage license and use it the same day. This makes Virginia a great option for destination elopements and flexible timelines.

Virginia requires an officiant for your ceremony but does not require witnesses, making it ideal for couples planning a private elopement.

Shenandoah National Park Elopement Permits

One of the best things about eloping in Shenandoah National Park is how simple the permit process is for small ceremonies.

If your elopement includes 15 people or fewer total, including your photographer and officiant, and you are not bringing décor or setup items, you do not need a Special Use Permit to elope in Shenandoah National Park.

Most elopements fall into this category, which allows couples to exchange vows at overlooks or along trails with minimal restrictions.

If a permit is required for your specific plans, the permit fee is included when you work with me. For couples not working with me, Shenandoah’s Special Use Permit fee is $150, plus the time and coordination required to apply and receive approval.

Best Locations to Elope in Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park offers a wide variety of elopement locations, including scenic overlooks along Skyline Drive and short hikes leading to more private views.

Some popular elopement locations in Shenandoah include Stony Man, Pinnacles Overlook, Timber Hollow, and several lesser-known pull-offs that provide incredible views with fewer crowds. I help couples choose locations based on accessibility, privacy, and the overall feel they want for their day.

There is also a park entrance fee, typically $30 per vehicle for a seven-day pass.

What a Shenandoah Elopement Day Can Look Like

Eloping in Shenandoah National Park isn’t just about the ceremony — it’s about creating a full experience that reflects who you are as a couple.

I help my couples plan days that might include:

  • A quiet sunrise ceremony at an overlook
  • A picnic after exchanging vows
  • Swimming in a nearby lake or swimming hole
  • Hiking to multiple scenic viewpoints
  • Horseback riding near the park
  • Reading private vows or letters together
  • Exploring Skyline Drive at a relaxed pace

Your elopement day can be adventurous, peaceful, or somewhere in between. I help you shape the timeline so it feels intentional and unrushed.
